Is Foster Parenting Right for Me?

You don't have to be perfect to make a difference. Foster parenting begins with compassion, stability and willingness to care.

Mother and Child

What Makes A Great Foster Parent?

Compassion and patience for children who may be navigating trauma, loss, change, or uncertainty.

A willingness to learn and grow, knowing that foster parenting is a journey and support is available every step of the way.

The ability to work as part of a team alongside birth families, social workers, therapists, educators, and other professionals who are supporting the child.

A commitment to celebrating progress, understanding that healing often happens one small step at a time.

Empathy, flexibility, and understanding as everyone works toward the best possible outcome for each child.

A willingness to meet licensing requirements and follow state guidelines that help keep children safe and supported.

Inquiry Form

The first step of the licensing assessment process at Family Alternatives is to complete the inquiry form. Please click here to view and complete the form. After the form is completed, a staff member from Family Alternatives will contact you.

Orientation

After the inquiry form is completed and a staff member connects with you, you will receive information for our foster parent orientation classes. These required classes provide knowledge and tools to support youth who are working through the transition of a new home.

Home Study

You will be assigned a Family Alternatives worker who will guide you through the home study and licensing process. This includes home and safety inspection, references, background checks, interviews and evaluations.

Licensure

If all licensing requirements are met, the Family Alternatives licensing team will review your applicant file and make a recommendation for foster care licensure.

Placement

Our Placement Coordinators will contact you when they believe a child maybe a good fit for your home. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the child and determine if you are able to provide the support and care they need.
